Webmaster Help
==============
If you're a webmaster living outside the US, this section is very
important for you. Recently the EU, as well as some countries not
part of the EU, have instituted some heavy penalties for any email
that is not verifiable as opt-in email. If you run an opt-in list
of any kind, and are not using a double opt-in system, now is the
time for you to upgrade your mailing list management system. Many
of the potential penalties that could be imposed on your for any
violation of the new laws are going to be more than enough to put
the average website owner out of business for good! I can't tell
you exactly what laws apply to you or your list, but if you want
to continue using email as a part of your marketing strategy you
are going to have to do a little research. Yes, I know that many
of the older spam laws haven't done much to stop spam, and have
not been all that enforceable, but you can expect that to change.
When I talk of severe penalties, I'm not kidding around. Some of
the potential penalties that could be imposed on you include the
very real threat of time in jail. Most of these new laws have not
yet gone into effect, but that doesn't mean that you have time to
waste in implementing a more responsible email collection method.
As the webmaster of a site, it is your responsibility to ensure
that the technology used on your site is in compliance with the
new laws. This could also be a good time to contact old clients
of yours and inform them of the new laws while proposing to make
an upgrade to their mailing list software for a fee. The time of
simple email management is fading fast, and those who do not make
a real effort to keep up will soon find themselves in a good deal
of trouble.

Set Your Goal ... Take Aim ... Fire
by John Colanzi
How many times have you come up with a new idea that is
going to make you a ton of money?
You've come with something new, that no one else is
doing, and you know you'll have no competition.
You're excited, you can see the money flowing in.
You're ready to act, but you hesitate.
Those nasty self doubts start creeping in:
** Who do I think I am?
** If this idea was any good, someone would already be
doing it.
** What if I fail?
** What will people think?
You've gone from an excited entrepreneur, to a deer
frozen in a car's headlights.
You've just killed your dream.
Don't think you're alone, it can happen to anyone.
There's a story about a master swordsman in Japan that
shows that it can happen to anyone.
One day while he was practicing, a stranger came in and
issued him a challenge.
The master agreed immediately.
As the master and the stranger were measuring each
other for the kill, the master became baffled by the
stranger's odd style.
The doubts started creeping in. "What is this a new
style I've never seen?"
As time went on the master kept noticing openings in
the stranger's defense. The doubts kept building.
"It must be a trick, as soon as I attack an opening,
he'll counter and send me to my death."
Finally after what seemed an eternity, the master
attacked and easily destroyed his opponent.
That was the fateful day he started the "No Mind"
school.
He realized you have to pull the trigger without
thought, before the doubts creep in.
Give your dreams a chance. Set your goal ... Take aim
... Fire.
You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Marketing Tip
=============
First to mind always trumps first to market! What this means is
that being the first product on the market in a specific area is
not a guarantee of success, not by a long shot. Who do you think
of when you think of a washing machine? I'm guessing that you're
not thinking of Hurley, who was actually the first to market. If
you think of a computer, does the name MITS come to mind? These
are just two examples of the many companies that were first to a
particular market, but aren't in the minds of consumers. If you
want to come into an existing field, don't let the fact that the
market has a few competitors stop you. The key to success in any
existing market isn't being first, it's being first in the minds
of the consumer. Have you ever wondered why companies like Coke,
and Nike spend so much money on advertising when they are already
the clear leaders in their market? They spend their millions in
order to ensure that they keep themselves first in the minds of
the consumer looking to buy. Entering an existing market can be
a great thing, sometimes even better than entering a market with
no existing competitors. When you come into an existing market
you have the advantage of knowing that the product can sell, and
the ability to position yourself as the "next step". Trying to
market your new product as "better" than the competition is not
a great strategy when entering a new market. Unseating the big,
and established company as the best in the market is going to
prove tough, but getting people to try your new service because
it is the "next step", or simply because it's new will always
prove a more solid strategy.
