Webmaster Help
==============
Keep your eyes on your favorite news site! Over the past few weeks
and months Microsoft has been facing legal troubles over a patent
that could cause major changes to the basic HTML structure. There
has already been one judgment against Microsoft and it is serious
enough that the w3c has already begun drafting modifications that
could effect millions of website on the Internet. Companies that
have been foes of Microsoft over the years have been stepping up
left and right to back them on this battle because it has the very
real potential to force webmasters into millions of hours of work
to fix pages that will be instantly broken on the next update of
the Internet Explorer browser. If you aren't sure what I'm talking
about you really should take the time to do some reading and get
yourself up to speed. As I'm sure you know, as the webmaster you
will be the one called upon to make these changes to your site if
Microsoft is forced to change how its browser works. A few years
ago this might not have been a big deal, but since IE makes up a
good 95% of the browsers in use on the Internet today, you can't
afford to ignore possible changes that would effect how your page
looks in it. I'm not saying that you'll have to re-learn HTML by
any stretch, but if you're using Flash, or just about any other
type of multimedia that involves a plug-in of some kind, you are
likely going to have to make changes. At this point the it's not
clear how this one will end up, but with Microsoft facing a need
to license something in order to keep HTML the way it is, I think
that we're going to see a change to HTML because Microsoft isn't
likely to bend.

Tomorrow Never Comes
by John Colanzi
There's a song that says, "Never worry about tomorrow,
tomorrow never comes."
How true those lyrics are.
We spend so much time worrying about what tomorrow will
bring that we miss out on the pleasures of today.
We listen to the news and the advertisers who have made
it their business to scare us with their headlines.
As soon as a baby is born, they start making the parents
feel guilty if they don't have a college fund set up.
They ask the older citizens, "Will your family be taken
care of when you've passed away?"
Planning for the future is fine, but what happened to
enjoying today's sunset, or a leisurely walk in the
woods.
What happened to "giving no thought for the morrow?"
That statement doesn't me you shouldn't plan for the
future. It means don't obsess and worrying over what may
or may not come.
There's a story about two women vacationing in Hawaii.
They're walking through this beautiful garden and the
one woman turns and says to her friend, "I wish Charlie
was here to see this."
The next day they're walking along a beautiful beach and
she turns to her friend and says again, "I wish Charlie
was here to see this."
This went on everyday of their vacation. Every beautiful
site they visited, she would repeat that phrase.
So who was Charlie?
Charlie was her husband who had recently passed away.
They had spent their whole married lives planning their
big vacation to Hawaii.
Sadly they never got to go, because Charlie was always
too busy working to secure their future.
Charlie never realized "tomorrow never comes."
What could have been a dream come true never happened.
This woman had to take that vacation by herself, wishing
Charlie was there to share it with her.
Don't lose today's pleasures worrying about what tomorrow
will bring.
Tomorrow never comes.

Marketing Tip
=============
This probably goes without saying, but this holiday season going
to be HUGE when it comes to the web. I'm not sure what it is that
you're selling, but now is the time to start positioning yourself
with holiday related keywords. There will be millions of searches
this year that relate to holiday shopping, and if you plan to get
a piece of the action you're going to have to start now. Start up
keyword advertising early and take a hard look at the results as
the holidays approach to fine tune your advertising as the money
really starts flowing. Why start so soon? Keywords will be seeing
big price changes as the holidays get closer and you're going to
have to have a solid record on hand to know which words you will
need to drop, and which words you're going to have to pour all of
your money into. I'd suggest that you give yourself a good 20 to
30 keyword phrases at this point and try to bring that down to a
good 5-10 as the months go by. Keywords may be going for a nickel
a click at this point, but you can expect that amount to jump as
much as ten times by late November to early December. If you have
access to old keywords searches, or better yet, last years server
logs, see what information you can dig out of them. I truly think
that keyword advertising has the potential to either make you or
break you this holiday season so you have to start working on it
now. This last year has seen pay-per-click advertising skyrocket
in popularity and you can be sure that it's only going to become
more congested as the holidays approach. Get in now, look at the
results, and you should be in a good spot when crunch time comes.
